Conceptual Sculpture
I created an abstract sculpture that explores the labels and social norms placed on women and brings to light the struggles they face because of them. It is made out of tea-stained rice paper molded into a teabag-like shape and is hand-stitched along the sides with red thread. The significance of the tea sets up the foundation for the entirety of the piece. Traditionally, wives are viewed as "the homemakers" and single-handedly host, offering tea to welcome their guests. Women are also considered caregivers and nurtures of their children, which is symbolized through the repeated stitching of the red string.

Below is a gallery of the suspended piece from different perspectives that portray different emotions women feel in these situations such as isolation, anger, and disassociation to name a few. Often times, people will argue these traditional norms are no longer in place and that modern society is more progressive, yet I have witnessed firsthand how these responsibilities and expectations affect the women in my life, and I believe the discussion is far from resolved.
